When Adeline heard his story, her heart just ached and it urged her to try and give the boy a better life. She's easily heartbroken whenever she sees poverty, mainly because she felt that good people don't deserve such a life. She herself never experienced poverty; none in the long line of her family ever been poor. But at least, instead of it making her spoiled, it made her feel for others who were born in unfortunate living condition. And it was Jonathan story that helped her made up her mind to adopt the four children into her household.

Jonathan had always been awkward around noblemen and noblewomen, but when he met Adeline, the awkwardness increases. He's not indebted to a lady who insisted that he should drop the formalities and politeness, and think of her as a friend, or anything other than a master or an employer. He simply couldn't. And he just couldn't imagine why Adeline would want that, why she would want to be acquainted with a lowborn boy who just ran away from his former employer.

He finally just assumed that she's strange that way, though, and with time, it became easier for him to just smile (a bit apologetically) and nod at Adeline's frequent reminder of him not to be so formal whenever he addressed her formally.
